She can’t simply go to the police and explain everything because, you know, parent’s high expectations or something. Police arrive in time to see Ingrid flee, and while they aren’t able to catch her, are now led down the wrong investigation path, leaving it up to Sherlock Holmes-loving Ingrid to solve things. Ingrid accidentally left her soccer boots at Kate’s house, and in a midnight excursion to get them back, unwittingly witnesses an unseen intruder take something else from the crime scene. The next day’s papers reveal Crazy Kate has been murdered.

They make small talk while Ingrid waits for the taxi, Crazy Kate disappears upstairs without a word, and then Ingrid’s taxi arrives and she rides off into the sunset. Short summary: Ingrid gets lost while trying to get from the dentist to soccer practice, and is helped by the town weirdo, Crazy Kate, who rings Ingrid a taxi and invites her inside her home to wait. This book was recommended as being at least a little bit similar. Well, I wouldn’t blame you if you hadn’t because I’d never heard of this book either until I went googling for something to satisfy the Veronica Mars shaped hole in my heart. Because I’m sure you, you who are reading this right now, have also read Down the Rabbit Hole, right? It’s as if Abrahams was trying to mimic the way a teenager would think in the narration, and while it wasn’t always obtrusive, when it was, it was annoying, essence of. This book is only 6 years old, but that’s a long time pop-culture wise, and I’m not entirely convinced the slang in this book was popular even back then. Seriously, slang should be banned from books. Maybe if I WERE 13 years old, I would have found the actual mystery more, well, mysterious, and all the terrible ‘old man attempting to write a TOTALLY RAD teenager’ moments less cringe worthy. In fact, had I been reading this back when I was 13 and taking a day off school, and it was all rainy and gloomy, and I was snuggled in bed and in want of something to read, this book would become an instant favourite. It’s not a fricken masterpiece or anything, but it’s a perfectly fine rainy day read, literally, in my case. I guess this is a pretty rude introduction to a review of a book that I did actually like. The title’s actually just a reference to the fact that Ingrid, our protagonist, is taking part in a community production of Alice in Wonderland. Down The Rabbit Hole, a mystery novel set in Vague Suburbia, where a Sherlock Holmes obsessed 13 year old girl determines to solve a murder in her seemingly innocent town, getting deeper and deeper into the mystery, meeting a number of quirky and sinister characters, and becoming so maddeningly distanced from her childhood innocence that she takes a crochet mallet and goes on a disturbing rampage … or not.
